Happiest on horseback, because even those risks are easier to understand than other people. Still trying to work out the contradictions of loving M.R. James and Channel AKA. But slowly getting there.
The John Verney cycle is something quite special, especially the first two books, which are the finest (and quite possibly the only) examples of quasi-Chestertonian post-Suez semi-bohemian shire adventures. Unlike many of their contemporaries, they withstand a 2009 reread.

I do like the pun with February Callendar, and all the great illustrations, though I never read the book as it is completely new to me.
